What Is ADHD?

The term ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder refers to a medical condition due to a difference in your brain development that affects attention as well as self-control.
At least 9% of children in the United States have a current diagnosis for ADHD. It can affect a child at school, at home and in friendships.
Many children do outgrow ADHD, however many have symptoms even as adults.
At least 5% of adults in the United States have ADHD. If untreated, it can cause problems. However if treated and managed properly, ADHD has its benefits.
What Are The Symptoms Of ADHD?

The symptoms of ADHD in both children and adults can range from mild to severe. Sometimes symptoms can vary in severity from day to day and can interfere with daily functioning.
The main features of ADHD in adults include having a hard time paying attention, being overly impulsive and always feeling restless.
Other features of ADHD in adults include talking too much, being unable to focus or even being hyper focused. Also anxiety and mood issues come with ADHD.
What Are The Positives Of ADHD?

For most people with adult ADHD, it's a life long condition.
It's true that living with ADHD has its struggles, especially if it's not being managed properly.
Also if you have ADHD, you may feel like you've been labeled by not just the media, but also the education system. As a result, you might feel bad about it and you might struggle with low self-esteem.
However you might not realize that if managed properly ADHD has its positives.
Many people with ADHD report being more energetic, creative, courageous and resilient than people who don't have it.
How Is ADHD Managed?

The most common way ADHD is managed is by taking medication. The type and dosage of medication used to treat this condition varies from person to person.
There are also holistic ways to manage ADHD symptoms including exercise, proper diet and getting plenty of sleep.
Since being unable to sit still and not be able to focus go hand-in-hand with each other, regular exercise helps a lot with managing ADHD symptoms.
There's a link between the severity of ADHD symptoms and poor diet. Diets that are high in fat and/or made up of processed foods can make symptoms worse. It helps to eat a diet rich in lean proteins along with fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Poor sleep has been linked to worsening ADHD symptoms. One night of poor sleep can be a disaster, it's already a challenge to stay focused and lack of sleep makes it worse.
Before you do anything toward managing your ADHD symptoms, talk to a professional.
ADHD And Career Success

There's no doubt that ADHD can cause problems that interfere with everyday functioning.
It's true that many people who suffer from ADHD have career struggles.
However it's also true that many people thrive in their careers because of ADHD.
Here's a very important question? Why is ADHD a career superpower?
Is it due to being energetic, creative, courageous and resilient?
Many people with ADHD do well in jobs that require out-of-the-box thinking, creativity, high energy as well as being able to work under pressure.
Examples of these jobs include:
Chef
Teacher
Skilled Trades
Entrepreneur
Firefighter
However keep in mind that there are careers that may not work out if you have ADHD. There are jobs that require you to sit still for long periods of time and there are jobs that can be rigid and mundane.
Some of these jobs include Air Traffic Controller, Librarian, Customer Service Representative, Accountant as well as Legal Professional.
There are some people with ADHD that can do these jobs, however many others can't. That's ok, because everyone with ADHD is different.
